CGM file format is used as international standard for storing text, raster graphics and 2D vector graphics. All the graphical data stored in CGM file format can be specified in text based source file which can then be compiled into binary file. This allows the CGM file to interchange the graphical data independent from any platform or application.
This file can also be used as metadata file which allows the user to store a large amount of information related to graphical data. Unlike other image data storing formats CGM file stores data and instructions that is used for reconstructing the whole image.
