The LIT file format saves the scanned images of a book in ebook format. In case the book is typed digitally the LIT file format saves the character ASCII codes to define each element in the ebook. Along with saving the data the LIT file format also saves the hierarchy of the elements in which they are added and stored. LIT is non XML based format and was originally used by Microsoft for ebooks. A number of applications allow reading and conversion of LIT file format.
