CMD file format is used by Microsoft as a command file. This file type falls in the category of batch file.

The purpose of batch file is to execute a number of commands that are added it in by the system or written by the user. The CMD file stores the commands or scripts in text format which are run or executed by the system. This file type was created to decrease the work load required to perform tasks of the system which are required on regular basis. When CMD file is run a shell program reads the script of the file and executes the commands written in it.
